Meet Umar
Umar is a bright, hardworking young man born into a Muslim family. He is an alumni of our pre-gap year program. Umar is the youngest of five children. He dropped out of school due to the lack of money for school fees. There were no jobs and things were hard.
Umar hated his life and thought God was not there. But then God brought Hope of Africa into his village, and Umar was picked from among all the youths in the village to join the pre gap year program for three months. Hope of Africa gave him a sense of belonging and showed him there is a purpose for his life. Now Umar became a Christian and has found his God given purpose. He has been empowered to care for his family and pursue his God-given dreams with ongoing mentorship.
Since joining Hope of Africa Umar is a changed person. Umar is so grateful to Hope of Africa for helping him find the greatest gift one could ever receive, to know Jesus as his personal Lord and Savior. He now understands that God is truly there and offers him hope and a future.
Umar says, “My time with Hope of Africa has allowed me to meet many people and be exposed to job opportunities using what I have around me. And it is Hope of Africa that taught me to care for my family.”
Umar continues to learn about farming by working alongside Herbert and Medard on our land in Uganda. He has been able to train many other families in the community on sustainable farming principles, which has allowed them also to sustain their families. Umar also leads a cell group for other youths in the Gimbo area to help train and disciple them and continues to be trained in business skills.
