In June 2011 we took 23 South African high school students on a week-long leadership development retreat. During that time, the students got to participate in several team-building activities that challenged them in ways they hadn’t faced before. They were given opportunities on a daily basis to develop both their leadership and followership skills. They also got to have first-ever experiences such as horseback riding, mountain climbing and rapelling. Almost all of these kids are orphans and every one of them comes from desperate poverty. Through this retreat and others like it, we are hoping to help them realize their God-given potential and envision a future not defined by poverty.
